Kiss Rocks John Varvatos Show in Milan

The usually staid fashion crowd rose to their feet and sang along to the 1975 anthem “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

LICKETY SPLIT: Gene Simmons, the tongue-flicking member of rock band Kiss, has no problem that pop star Miley Cyrus has been copping his act. “Anybody has the right to stick out any appendage they like,” he said backstage after the John Varvatos show in Milan on Saturday night. Simmons and his band mates certainly lapped up the attention after they came out for a bow, surprising the usually staid fashion crowd, who rose to their feet and sang along to the 1975 anthem “Rock and Roll All Nite.” Simmons related how he’s been applying his own oil-based makeup for 40 years, noting that the demonic design naturally divides the face into two. His next application will be Jan. 25, when the band celebrates their 40th anniversary with a gig at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, preceding a summer tour.

“Beautiful style does not depend on fashion — fashion is temporary and is about creating a market to sell clothes. Style is timeless,” he explained. “If you look at the rock stars of the Sixties and Seventies, they weren’t dressed by designers. They went to thrift shops, they went to the Salvation Army.”

Stanley added that, in his private life, he dresses in Varvatos, Kiton and Brioni. “But I don’t wear Brioni on the weekends when I’m cooking and making pizza. I’m a damn good chef. Then, it’s time for T-shirts and jeans,” he said.

On April 8, Stanley will release his autobiography “Face the Music” (Harper Collins). Asked about how it feels to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he replied: “It took a while, but I’m happy to be there.”
