A Hint of the Forties at Dries Van Noten

Peter Philips and Sam McKnight crafted the beauty look for the show.

PARIS — Makeup artist Peter Philips put the accent on models’ peepers for the Dries Van Noten show here on Wednesday.

“There’s one graphic element — a black eye on a really basic foundation,” he said. “There’s just a brush stroke of black, pitch black.

“The collection is full of prints and lots of colors, very bold combinations, and we wanted to do something which is strong but also at the same time doesn’t clash with the clothing,” he continued. “That’s why there’s no color statement in the makeup; there’s so much going on already.”

Hairstylist Sam McKnight felt part of Van Noten’s collection had a bit of a Forties feeling. So models’ tresses were turned under (using a braid as an anchor) for a faux bob, and a slight wave was added to the front using a curling iron.

Fudge Salt Spray was put on for a lived-in, dry matte texture. Next there was a spritz of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. Echoing some hints of metal in the fashion, McKnight fastened a silver-colored clip on one side of each model’s head.

“I want them to look like they did their hair three days ago, not this morning,” he said. “It’s quite formed, but in a natural way.”

In other news, McKnight teamed with jewelry designer Vicki Sarge to create a line of colorful hair accessories, which are to debut exclusively on Net-a-Porter in March.

“They’re based on dying flowers in my garden,” joked McKnight, who said the pieces — which include combs and hair elastics — are made of Perspex and Swarovski crystals.
