FRANCE’S NEW TERRITORY: Kim France has kept a low profile since departing Lucky magazine in September 2010. She spent a summer in the country. She started and stopped working on a memoir. She created a style blog (more on that later). Now, she’s thrust herself back in the public eye. France has become a curator for the relatively new shopping site OpenSky, joining commercial warhorses Martha Stewart, Bobby Flay, Tom Colicchio, Cynthia Rowley and newcomers Suze Yalof Schwartz and Elise Loehnen. Each curator gets a cut of the proceeds when their suggested items are purchased by OpenSky members.
“They are getting a lot of people behind their product and there is a sense of possibility here,” said France. “A startup has a lot of fun energy and OpenSky has managed to get a lot of authorities from different fields.” OpenSky chief executive officer John Caplan, a former ceo of Ford Models, said that since the site debuted in April, more than one million members have signed on. “This is boutique shopping in a Facebook-like environment,” he said. “We’re trying to put together the world’s most interesting personalities with the most interesting brands.”
France will contribute regularly to OpenSky, but she’s also getting ready to launch her aforementioned blog, “Girls of a Certain Age.” “It exists in the world now, but it’s private,” said France, who spent 10 years as editor in chief of Lucky. “It will be about shopping, style and popular culture. Basically, it will just be me going off on things.” The blog is aimed at women who aren’t “30 or 25 anymore.” France was tired of looking at countless blogs featuring ad campaigns or pictures of winsome 26-year-olds. “It’s inspiring but it’s not for me.” She thought about trying to raise money for it, but decided not to, since the sites she most admires have all grown organically. “I don’t think I’m interested in working for or with The Man anymore,” she said.
