FASHIONABLY INTERIOR: “I’ll be the first to admit that we’ve never had a cover quite as eye-popping as this current one by Donatella Versace,” writes Rupert Thomas, editor of The World of Interiors, in his editor’s letter, which introduces the title’s first fashion issue.

The issue took Thomas most of a year to commission and features a glimpse into the domestic lives of Christopher Bailey, Giorgio Armani, Nicolas Ghesquière, Vivienne Westwood, Donatella Versace, Marc Jacobs, Sarah Burton, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten, Consuelo Castiglioni, Azzedine Alaïa, Hubert de Givenchy, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, Rei Kawakubo and Phoebe Philo — told from their own points of view.

“I’ve long wanted to do an issue based around fashion,” Thomas told WWD. “Bringing the issue to fruition, however, was more complicated — not only because those I wanted involved have more pressing priorities than being in Interiors (shock, horror), but because I couldn’t see a way of capturing their individual spirit, as opposed to representing them through the prism of the magazine. That’s to say that I did not want The World of Interiors’ view of Vivienne Westwood, Christopher Bailey, et al. The idea was to allow the designers complete control in order to have a genuine peek into how they view the world around them.”

Thomas said the designers took responsibility for the images, in some cases taking them themselves, and wrote the text, whether a full article or a one-liner.

There are also features on Ralph Lauren’s Colorado cabin and barn, Pierre Bergé’s Tangier villa, Delfina Delettrez’s Paris pad, and a look inside the home of fashion set designer Tony Hornecker.

The issue hit U.K. newsstands last week and will be on sale in the U.S. this week.
