Intel Making Fashion Push Into Wearable Technology

The company disclosed Monday that it is teaming with the CFDA, Barneys New York and Opening Ceremony to make a significant statement in the area.

TECH-TO-WEAR: Several companies have flirted with wearable technology, but now, a major player is lining up influential fashion names to make a significant statement in the area. On Monday, Intel Corp. disclosed that it is teaming with the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Barneys New York and Opening Ceremony around the wearable tech field. The project will launch with a collaboration between Intel and Opening Ceremony: a smart bracelet designed by the influential downtown retailer that will be available at Barneys, though details of the piece and the unveiling date were not disclosed.

In the long term, Intel will also work with the CFDA to team developers of technology and the latest hardware and software with its designer members to develop new products. “Wearables are an area that we are pursuing,” said Ayse Ildeniz, vice president of business development and strategy for Intel’s new devices group. “Most of it comes from technology companies, and we see these as very personal things. We thought the fashion industry should be in the driver’s seat.”
