QUEENLY SUM: Even Marie Antoinette — famed for her extravagant shopping habits — may have balked at the eye-watering price a pair of her slippers fetched at a recent auction sale in Toulon, France: 43,225 euros, or $57,336 at current exchange rates.
Dated circa 1790, the size 36.5 slippers (about U.S. size 6.5), crafted in white silk and embellished with tricolor ribbons, had been estimated to fetch 3,000 to 5,000 euros, or $3,979 to $6,632.
