BREAKFAST IN PARIS: The Champagne and caviar-stuffed quails’ eggs on offer were fitting breakfast fodder to celebrate the life of fashion icon Diana Vreeland, one guest was overheard saying before the Sunday morning preview screening in Paris of the documentary “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.”
Vreeland would have no doubt appreciated the setting for the event — the Asian-inspired garden of Art Deco cinema La Pagode, on the Left Bank — mused Barneys New York creative director Dennis Freedman. The screening was hosted by the retailer ahead of the film’s French release on Wednesday in around 10 theaters.
“She was someone who took us somewhere, and I don’t think anyone is taking us anywhere anymore,” Freedman said. “That kind of imagination and that subconscious way of expressing yourself makes you think, is there a place for that now and if not, why not?”
“Paris was an important city for her, because she was born here, and she loved French fashion, some people said more than American fashion,” said Lisa Immordino Vreeland, the film’s director, who is married to the legendary fashion editor’s grandson Alexander.
“I’m looking forward to discovering the film,” said Chloé chief executive officer Geoffroy de la Bourdonnaye, who was taking some time out between the brand’s birthday party on Friday evening and last-minute preparations for its runway show on Monday. “I have her book, but we’re all the same — we have books that we don’t have time to read,” he confided.
In yet another personal touch, guests including Olivier Rousteing, Patrick Demarchelier, Didier Grumbach and Aurélie Bidermann left the screening with a mini lunchbox packed with Vreeland’s favorite midday staples: a miniature of Johnny Walker Red Label whiskey and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
