No. 21 Plots Retail Expansion

Alessandro Dell'Acqua's fashion label just opened a store in Tokyo and is plotting further retail expansion in both Asia and on its home turf of Milan.

MOVING AHEAD: Alessandro Dell’Acqua’s fashion label No. 21 just celebrated the opening of its first freestanding store in Tokyo and is plotting further retail expansion in both Asia and on its home turf of Milan. Roberto Ortello, chief executive officer of 2112 Srl, No. 21’s corporate parent, said the company plans to open a freestanding store and two shops-in-shop in Seoul by the end of February. Meanwhile, he is scouting potential locations in Osaka on his trip to Japan.

Ortello said the Japanese market has proven robust and will account for 30 to 35 percent of the Gilmar-produced brand’s 2014 sales of 22 million euros, or about $29.5 million. “For now, we have followed the strategies of the market. Therefore Japan is at the top of the list. The [Tokyo] store is a sort of thank you to the Japanese people who have helped us a lot, who have supported us a lot,” he said at the Tokyo store’s opening party Thursday.

Ortello said No. 21 is eager to open its first store in its home city of Milan but he could not give a time frame. “Everyone is asking us,” he said. “It will happen and happen soon.”

Ortello added that he’s hoping the brand will ink a licensing deal for eyewear sometime next year.
