TOWERING IN MILAN: Glistening towers have taken root by Milan’s Garibaldi train station in a new area called Porta Nuova Varesine, which the city aims to establish as a business, retail and event hub — and fashion show hotspot.
A cocktail party hosted by Vogue Italy editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani and real estate investment firm Hines Italia’s chief executive officer Manfredi Catella Thursday night celebrated the completion of a 2,788-feet pedestrian walkway all the way around the towers. An exhibit there by Vogue Italy, called “The Italian Way,” also paid tribute to the country’s many creative contributions in fashion, art, design photography and cinema, and will remain in place until September.
Following the green carpet stretched across the walkway, guests stepped inside a modern structure where cherries, Popsicles and cheese pastries were served alongside wine and Negroni. Spotted in the crowd, Costume National founder and creative director Ennio Capasa spoke enthusiastically about the city’s blossoming new district.
“We were the very first to hold a show here,” he said, referring to his Sept. 2013 women’s show, held in Viale della Liberazione, which marked his return to Milan fashion week after 23 years in Paris. “I’m not sure what other designers have planned for the future, but I think this whole location is fantastic,” Capasa added.
The Camera della Moda is reportedly eyeing Porta Nuova as a site for future runway shows.
