BEIJING — First Lady Michelle Obama, looking fresh and rested after a long-haul flight across the Pacific on Thursday, started off her tour of China with a visit to a Beijing high school on Friday.

Obama, her mother and two daughters are scheduled for an official dinner with Peng Liyuan, wife of President Xi Jinping, tonight.

During the school visit, Michelle Obama traced the strokes of the Chinese character for "eternal," under the guidance of a student, while Peng made a calligraphy gift of her own to her American counterpart.

Michelle Obama wore a loose black vest, wide-legged pants, and white long sleeve shirt from the label 3.1 Phillip Lim.

The women then visited Beijing's former imperial palace compound. Online chatter has focused on how both countries are taking a clever approach to diplomatic relations through the wives of presidents — perhaps the true meaning of "soft power."
