FINAL CUT: In Rome Thursday, Louis Vuitton unveiled the winners of its second annual Journeys Awards short film competition featuring young directors. Yukinori Makabe of Japan and Alexis Willis of France each won $25,000 for the Jury’s Award and for the People’s Choice Award, respectively, at a ceremony hosted at the Louis Vuitton Rome Etoile boutique. Special mention went to Jordan Schiele of the U.S. Among the guests were Zoe Cassavetes (a member of the jury), Princess Alessandra Borghese, Pietro Beccari and Luchino Visconti.

Two hundred and fifty cinematographers from more than 40 countries submitted three-to-five-minute shorts focusing on encounters during travel — be it with a place, person or one’s self. The competition’s jury, headed by Italian film director Luca Guadagnino (of “I Am Love”), selected 10 short movies that are now featured on journeysawards.com and YouTube and screened in the Etoile space, which was inaugurated in January. The contest was launched in 2010 in collaboration with director Wong Kar-wai and the award ceremony coincided with the Rome Film Festival.
