ELEGANT ETCHINGS: Claridge’s hotel will host an exhibition to showcase the work of its artists in residence, fashion illustrator David Downton, during London Fashion Week. Downton, a regular fixture at the couture shows in Paris, joined Claridge’s as its official fashion artist in residence in June 2011 and has since captured the likenesses of the grand establishment’s most notable guests, including Laura Bailey, Joan Collins, Alber Elbaz, Diane von Furstenburg, Stephen Jones, Christian Louboutin, Paul Smith and Dita Von Teese. Many of these were sketched at table four in the Art Deco Fumoir bar, which Downton refers to as his “office.”
Around 25 of these illustrations will be on show at the hotel from September 13 and run throughout Fashion Week.
“Being artist in residence at the most beautiful hotel in London has, as I’ve often said, been the gig of the century,” said Downton, whose recognizable renderings have appeared in almost every leading magazine and newspaper in the U.K., and whose client list includes Harrods and Tiffany & Co. “I expected the luxury of course, and the service, but who knew about the magic? Claridge’s is Claridge’s and everywhere else is everywhere else...”
