FURNISHED SPACE: Karl Lagerfeld arrived at the Cassina showroom on the Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris on Thursday evening to find the place packed with fans taking in his exhibition of photographs of the Italian brand’s iconic furniture creations.

Guests craned to take snaps of the designer on their smartphones as he toured the exhibit with Matteo di Montezemolo, vice chairman of Poltrona Frau Group, which owns Cassina. Taking a breather on the pavement outside the store afterward, Lagerfeld described the venture as a passion project. “All those things I photographed are things I love, and most of them I owned and had in different houses,” he said. “I’m 100 percent behind the brand because I think they are great. They have the most beautiful iconic pieces in the world of furniture editions.”

Lagerfeld’s 34 unique prints of Cassina creations, including Charlotte Perriand’s Nuage bookshelf and Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s Zig-Zag chair, remain on show in Paris until March 10, before moving to Milan for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April.

Lagerfeld approached the pieces with an abstract eye, creating graphic images that are printed on Plexiglas in supersize formats. “It’s interesting in the sense that those pieces are so famous that to look at them with a different eye gives a new vision of something you knew already,” he remarked.

For his next project, Lagerfeld will experiment with a large-format version of the 19th-century daguerreotype, a photographic process using silvered copper plates. “Fendi is restoring the Trevi Fountain, and I am making a book about all the Roman fountains called ‘The Glory of Water,’” he explained.
